(SPOILER WARNING: While I'll be pulling Hinata from a point that isn't as spoiler heavy as it could be, I'll be discussing future and past events that contain heavy spoilers for both Super Dangan Ronpa 2 and its prequel Dangan Ronpa 3: Despair Side. Please proceed with caution!
In addition to referencing some material from endgame, I'll also be including some mentions of things said in "Free Time Events". These are optional events where you can choose a character for Hinata to talk to during more peaceful times on the island. It's impossible to see them all without multiple playthroughs or utilizing the game's bonus mode, but some of them contain details that I feel are important to Hinata's character, so I'll be including them here.)

History: Here!
Personality:
"I'm not so special that I have to introduce myself, and formalities are always a little embarrassing...
"Well, this is what's expected... I guess that's how I should think about it.
"My name is Hinata Hajime."
When we are first introduced to Hinata Hajime, we are presented with a serious-minded and logical young man. It's not quite the first thing that's made apparent to us; that spotlight is placed on Hinata's high regard for talent and long-standing admiration of Hope's Peak Academy, as well as his excitement over finally being accepted. But it quickly becomes apparent that first and foremost, Hinata is someone who thinks carefully about things before he does them and approaches situations with practicality in mind. He's the type of person that tries to rationalize things that don't make sense, and his way of thinking is firmly set in reality - so much so that when he and the other students intending to join Hope's Peak Academy suddenly find themselves transported from a schoolroom to a beach by a talking stuffed rabbit, Hinata's first reaction is to lose consciousness. Not only is he firmly a realist, but Hinata tends to worry quite a bit and be pessimistic towards the situation that he and the rest of the students have found themselves in. Even as the rest of the class is initially carefree, finding ways to relax and have fun after Usami's instructions to enjoy their stay on the island, Hinata is constantly concerned that something bad will happen and unceasingly searches for a way to leave. He's actually a bit envious of the others that can act so carefree, but is unwavering in the fact that he "just can't think like that".
'No... Thinking about "if" is a waste of time. We have to do this...no matter what!'
Considering the worsening situations that they end up in as a group (the Killing Game) and for Hinata individually (his inability to remember his talent), a habitual worrier like Hinata has plenty of reasons to have a lot on his mind. As the story progresses Hinata's memories do not return (which he doesn't learn the truth about until far later), and it in fact becomes a source of great stress for him, even if he doesn't always let it show on his face. During one of Kuzuryuu's Free Time Events, he remarks about how Hinata has been able to keep "a cool head" throughout everything so far. Hinata refutes this, saying that he's only been doing his best to endure it - but that's precisely what Kuzuryuu means, and what really is notable about Hinata. Despite all of his worries and doubts, he pushes through everything with a usually level head, forcing himself to keep going for the sake of his own and his friends' survival. That isn't to say he's without his moments of weaknesses either. There are several moments throughout the game where he has moments of intense worry or anxiety to the point of it being either momentarily disabling or pushing him to impulsive action. But for all of these struggles, Hinata is able to bounce back just as strongly. His wells of inner strength are vast, and even as every murder that occurs tears at his heart, Hinata is still determined to push past it and do what must be done to save everyone.
"Hehe, everyone can get along and study together. It's a student's duty to study."
"...Don't act like a teacher."
As for other things immediately apparent, one is his tendency to speak whatever is on his mind, often to the point of being blunt or rude. He certainly has moments of politeness, particularly with people who are of a higher standing (he instinctively does this with the Super High School Level students when they meet, and is shown using polite Japanese with teachers and people of higher standing than him in Dangan Ronpa 3). But Hinata's usual modus operandi is to be frank, dry and/or sarcastic when he speaks. He isn't rude in a way that's unkind - unless he doesn't like you, or you've well and truly ticked him off - but it's more that he has no regard for manners when he's speaking normally to people. He can use tact and hold back comments at times if he knows that his words could cause harm, such as not bringing up Nanami's mother during a Free Time Event since her family seems to be a sensitive subject, but Hinata's first instinct is always to say exactly what he's thinking. Some of Hinata's more biting thoughts can crop up because he has a low tolerance for putting up with nonsense or things that he finds annoying - enough so that he can be somewhat grumpy about things for quite some time if he's pushed far enough. It's not to say that he necessarily has a bad temper, but more so that he can stay mad for a while once he's gotten to that point. In this way - and also a bit in general as well - Hinata can be fairly stubborn, staying set in his ways of thinking and acting.
"...I really don't mind. If you think I look like someone who's easy to talk to, then I'll listen to you as much as you want.
However, even if some first impressions of Hinata are rather prickly, that isn't to say that he doesn't have his warmer side. To the contrary, Hinata can actually be quite kind to the people he considers friends, offering a warm smile and joking around with them when he lets his guard down and relaxes (even if his jokes tend to be of the deadpan and sarcastic variety). One of the things he seems best at, in fact, is offering an ear when his classmates want or need to get things off their chest, and getting them to open up about things that are personal and important to them. In Hinata's respective free time events with them, Komaeda suggests that Hinata's forgotten talent is Super High School Level Serenity (though this baffles Hinata himself), and Kuzuryuu says he could maybe be the Super High School Level Counselor because of how he was able to open up and reflect about his past (meanwhile, Hinata thinks this is too stressful of a talent to have). Even if Hinata isn't too sure of himself in that regard, it's something that he truly has a knack for. His skill lies in being able to recognize when someone is struggling with something, and finding the words or actions to help them through it.
'Why...would you use that as an example...!?'
"Oh, what happened? Your face is red, Hinata-kun."
As much as Hinata's understanding of people seems to be a latent talent of his, there are still plenty of times that his communication with others doesn't go too smoothly. Namely when he gets flustered, and this happens to be the case with girls in particular. For the most part, Hinata's interactions with his female classmates go the same way they do with the boys, but he gets embarrassed or even shy around them much more easily. There are a few times in the Free Time Events that it is especially apparent (such as getting flustered when Nanami mentions knowing how babies are made and yet not knowing how to fall in love), but one of the most notable cases for Hinata outside of those Events is when he's left alone in a room with the girls in their swimsuits, and his response is to immediately flee. Hinata isn't especially good at vocalizing this issue, and tends to push it away or attempt to steadfastly ignore it like most other things that bother him.
"Everything is starting to feel meaningless... The desperate attempts, the sad goodbyes, the conflicts, the trust I felt until now..."
"It's all disappearing until all I feel is... Despair."
But every wall has its weak points, its cracks that can be exploited to make the foundation crumble. For Hinata, the thing that makes his firm resolve start to break apart is simply the truths that he learns. The fractures begin when it's revealed that Hinata has no talent at all; it doesn't stop him from moving forward, and if anything he seems to push harder and more desperately than ever before. But under the surface, there's a hesitance and lack of confidence that wasn't there before. It's something that gets pushed to the backburner as he tries his hardest to live from one moment to the next with the others, a juxtaposition between determination and uncertainty that remains present throughout the events that follow... until the wedge is driven in even further by what he learns about Nanami Chiaki. The revelation that the Future Foundation's traitor is Nanami, who he'd trusted and cared for deeply, who always seemed to put him back on the right path in times of weakness, is what undoes Hinata - but not as much as the fact that they all must vote for her execution in order to live, and Nanami encourages them to do so and survive with a warm smile. After every other execution, Hinata had always felt shock and distress - but it's Nanami's death that drives him to his knees, that leaves a terrible pain in his heart as he agonizes in his thoughts over not being able to thank her. His uncharacteristic detachment and emotional exhaustion over it leaves Hinata barely functional for the first time since the start of the Killing Game, and he is only driven out of it two days later by a sudden fear of being completely alone.
"Hope...despair...do whatever you want! It's not my problem!"
Though Hinata carried on weakly and uncertainly through everything else that happened, it's the knowledge that their entire time on the island was a virtual reality that makes him truly break. It isn't like the previous things that rattled him; this makes is what makes him lose his entire will to fight. Hinata is caught between the choice of staying himself or reverting to Kamukura, responsible for bringing the virus that started the Killing Game and void of everything that makes him Hinata Hajime; he's left with the decision to save himself the world, options that are fraught with both hope and despair. And his reaction is to buckle; to become angry at the ones who brought him here, even if it was the only way to rescue him from what he'd become, and rejecting responsibility and easily falling into the illusion that the AI Enoshima leads him into. For the first time, he refuses to do anything, willing to fall into a false reality instead of facing the truth with his head held high.
"I've decided...I'm done running away...
"I will fight for my future! I will fight alongside the future that everyone created for me!"
The one to snap him out of that mindset is the one who always seemed to put him back on the right path, or settle his head in the moments he'd lost his cool. When Nanami appears to him in an empty headspace to offer calm reassurances of the power they have to make a miracle with their own hands, Hinata's will to fight returns. Where before Hinata had raged against Hope's Peak Academy and the Future Foundation for placing him in this situation and pinned all of the blame on them, he becomes disgusted by this mental image of himself wearing Kamukura’s face that refuses to do anything and rejects any responsibility. Beating back the complacent and self-pitying part of his heart, he emerges from that idealistic illusion with Nanami's help as someone changed - not just in looks, as his eyes appear red and his hair turns white, but in his demeanor as well. He becomes the person he longed to be for his whole life, someone able to walk tall and proud of himself, but not because of the talent he thought he needed to get there. And yet, the person that's filled with an inexplicable power and will is not Kamukura Izuru, as the Enoshima AI first thinks - though changed, he's more Hinata Hajime than he's ever been.
He is the Hinata Hajime who has found confidence not in talent, but in himself, accepting the weight of his sins yet still walking with his head held high; embracing something that is not despair yet not quite hope, he chooses to believe in the future that can overcome probabilities and calculations, forming a miracle out of sheer force of will. He chooses to believe in the bonds that he formed with the people who are not his classmates by the standards of a fallen school, but are his classmates in his heart; the friends he cares for deeply, their ties solidified by their shared burdens of happiness and pain. His choice is to believe in himself, someone whose future and choices had once been ripped away from him, whose past is tinged in flaws and sadness and regret - but who is now determined to not forget what came before yet not linger on it, to take his life into his own hands and live on as himself by his own terms. He is Hinata Hajime, a person filled with artificial talent outside of the program, but who has so much more to live for than something as empty as that.
And yet, this present Hinata is one who is still unknowing of the truth. With a long road ahead of him, there are still many difficult and painful things that he'll have to go through. Perhaps he will walk a path that is a little different from the one he's intended to, or maybe it won't be that different after all, with all of its hardship and despair bunched in with the little bits of good. But regardless of how his road may be shaped, there is one thing about him that will remain unchanged.
Above all else, Hinata Hajime will live on as himself - a young man who faces turmoil with a calm head, protective of and loyal to his friends, and pursuing the truth no matter how much hope or despair may be waiting on the other side.
"I will keep on living as Hinata Hajime. My future...lies here."
Inventory: (With the exception of the Student Handbook, the following are presents that you can buy or randomly get from a capsule machine in the game and the descriptions given. I selected most of these via RNG, but if the mods feel that Hinata should not have some or any of the items, that's perfectly fine!)
Student Handbook:Given to students attending Hope’s Peak Academy. Contains basic information on Hinata and his classmates.
Mineral Water: Drawn from the ocean depths and rigorously purified. Ideal for a modern on-the-go public unsatisfied with tap water.
Century Potpourri: An aromatic blend of ripened flowers, herbs, and fruit skins. You’ll enjoy the smell of this potpourri for one hundred years.
Ubiquitous Handbook: A perfectly designed handbook useful for documenting various events that occur throughout the day. It comes with a pen that can be easily stored inside.
Another Hope: This valuable diamond was created from the remaining fragments of the original Hope Diamond when it was cut long ago. Rumors persist that death follows anyone who has this item in their possession.
Hope’s Peak Ring: A school ring emblazoned with the Hope’s Peak Academy school crest. It stands as proof of friendship between those who spent their youth together.
Abilities: Hinata is just an ordinary human, average in just about every way. The thing that stands out about him the most is that he has good deduction skills; although Hinata himself says it one point that he is "bad at using his brain", he's still clever enough to figure out murder cases before most of his other classmates (with the exception of Komaeda and sometimes Nanami). Also of note is that he is physically fairly fit, being decent at running if not much else.
Flaws: Hinata definitely has plenty of flaws - as mentioned in the personality section above, being too blunt or rude are things that stand out in particular, as well as losing his temper when his buttons are pushed and a tendency to get grumpy afterwards. However, the thing that stands out as his worst flaw is his hunger for talent. That in itself isn't a bad thing, necessarily - in fact, his drive and passion for it probably errs more on the positive side. But how much it means to him is worrying, considering that he was willing to sign away his own life, giving up his mind and body and personality, just for the sake of being given a talent by Hope's Peak. That single-minded focus was what resulted in him being turned into the emotionless Kamukura Izuru, who was in turn used as a linchpin by Enoshima Junko to spread despair through the world and ultimately leading to the killing games that almost erased himself and his friends.
SAMPLES
Action Log Sample:
[His heart is pounding away in his chest as he catches his breath behind the dilapidated pillar, beating out a tempo of his fear and panic as Hinata tries to reason out what's going on in his head. Tries to make sense of it, because there's absolutely nothing about this situation that makes any kind of sense.
It doesn't make sense, he repeats it in his head, half-hysterical, as his fingers press into his arm to stem the bleeding from where the blade had dug in.
He shivers, full-bodily, as he recalls it. Waking up on the ground of... this dusty place, wherever it is, almost resembling a Colosseum of some sort. It would seem ridiculous if not for the things he's already been through. He'd even half-wondered if somehow he had woken up on a fourth island by some trick of Monokuma's, right up until he'd seen the thing that made the mad world he's been living in even stranger.
...Clowns.
It's stupid. It's so stupid, he shouldn't be running for his life from something as ridiculous as a clown. Or mob of clowns, as it were. And yet not a single one of them had responded to him when he asked what was happening, where he was and why they were here; nothing aside from creepy laughter that had made his skin crawl as they circled around him, a pack of wolves closing in on unwitting prey.
He'd been too focused on his frustration and nerves as he started to yell at them about ignoring him. Hadn't paid attention to the one on his right as the clown pulled a knife on him, driving it into his bicep with wild laughter as Hinata screamed.
Even now, he can hear the echoes of that distant laughter. He shuts his eyes against their burning. Somehow, by some luck or miracle, he'd managed to break free of the circle and sprint away to hide, but... How long will that last?]
Am... [His voice is a croak as he opens his eyes to the night sky.] Am I really going to die like this, all alone...?
[No. No, he can't do that. He can't die here; he'd never forgive himself for it.
Tsumiki and Kuzuryuu... are still watching over everyone, trying their hardest to make sure they'll be okay. He can't leave them alone; he has to help too. Owari and Mioda and... and Komaeda are still sick in the island's hospital. I can't leave them alone. Even now, his heart is sick with worry. Especially for Komaeda, so close to death. Even if he shouldn't be worrying about someone like that, he still...]
...I can't die here. I won't. [His voice shakes in the quiet, but there's an edge of hard determination underneath the fear.] I'm going to get out of here and return to everyone else... I can't afford to die when they need me.
[He forces himself up onto unsteady legs. The laughter is getting closer, as if they can hear him and are mocking his efforts.
He's scared. He's really, really scared... But he's fought for his life before during the Class Trials. Tsumiki is fighting to take care of everyone while he's stuck here being hunted, and Komaeda is fighting to even take another breath. So he can do this. He must.
He'll fight his way back to them. No matter what gets in his way, he'll find a way to push past it and survive so he can see them all again.
Just wait for me a little longer... A breath shudders its way out of his chest, and he starts to walk. Everyone, just wait for me a little bit longer... I'll get out of here somehow and come back. I promise.]

That single-minded focus was what resulted in him being turned into the emotionless Kamukura Izuru, who was in turn used as a linchpin by Enoshima Junko to spread despair through the world and ultimately leading to the killing games that almost erased himself and his friends.

I promise.]
